Apple unveiled the next generation of iPods a few minutes ago at one of Steve Jobs' trademark wowie-zowie this-is-the-greatest-thing-ever keynotes at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The highlight of the event was clearly the all-new all-sexy iPod Touch, which is essentially an iPhone sans the phone, with all its touchscreen goodness. The Touch includes Wi-Fi just like the iPhone, letting you browse the Web and get info on stuff like stocks and weather, not to mention watch YouTube videos — all stuff you've never been able to do on an iPod before.
Another new trick is wireless downloading. The Touch will have a button for the iTunes Music Store, letting you sign on and buy songs from any Wi-Fi hotspot. The next time you sync with your computer, the Touch will copy it over to your iTunes library. It's about time this feature was added, though it gives you another thing to worry about if your iPod is stolen (assuming payment is automatic).
You'll be able to choose between a 8-GB model ($300) and an 16-gig ($400). Should be available in a week or two. We like.

CORRECTION: In my haste to get the iPod news up, I mistakenly put in the wrong capacities. The piece has now been corrected. Sorry, guys!

iPhone - phone DOES NOT = iPod Touch (sadly).
I really wish it did. I was all set to part with $400 and preorder such a device (since I don't need/want a cell phone but love ALL the rest of what the iPhone offers). As anyone looking at a screen shot of an iPhone can tell you... an iPhone has Notes, Mail, Weather, Stocks, and Maps. None of these are "phone" features. So let's look at the iPod Touch...
The iPod Touch DOES NOT have Notes, Mail, Weather, Stocks and Maps. While you could argue that you can use Safari to check webmail, or weather, stock, or map websites. These certainly lack the polish of the dedicated apps on the iPhone.
I could care less about a the camera in the iPhone... but if you do, you'll also notice... that isn't in the iPod Touch either.
Another thing I was really hoping to see on an iPhone (minus the phone) was a replacment for the SMS Text app. The obvious option being iChat.
Don't get me wrong. The iPod Touch is definitely another great product from Apple. But an iPhone - phone it is not.

Who cares about polish when iGoogle Mobile (the version of Google that the iPod Touch can access gives you complete access to all of the features on ons single solitary page. minus the notes ... that you will have to deal without ... by the by wait until developers can easily develop for it then you will be able to add it at will.

I'm a senior manager for technology and a Microsoft user for the last 15 years and I never gave Apple a second look. However this device, which I got as a gift, is extremely useful. I’m already watching full length movies and accessing the Internet when I travel. Much easier than having a laptop on a flight and can get it by airport security with no problems. The touch screen is the best I have ever seen. Apple, you did a great job.

This is a really sleek, shiny, touchable phone that nobody would get sick off. It has all the same features as all the other phones but you it has the itunes within it as well as internet access and again the most coolest thin of them all is that the screen is touchable. The only issue with it is the price but other than that this phone is worth it.

All portable electronic devices will be touch-screen in the near future. In the distant future, voice activation will be the common interface.

I don't know, I think the iPhone has the best touch screen keyboard so far but I still thenk they need a better one before it becomes standard
