Yahoo to add text-messaging feature to email service

yahoo-mail-new.jpg

Like every adult over the age of 15, we type more quickly than we text. In fact, receiving texts from friends can make us a feel testy— it costs us $.10 to reply, and it's not even healthy. So we were excited to hear that over the next six weeks, Yahoo mail is going to begin letting users send text messages by email to cell phones for free. It's all part of Yahoo's "new" user interface (most of which you'll be familiar with if you have a Yahoo account— it's been in beta for two years). When you hit the "compose" button, you'll have an option to send a message by email, via chat, or by text. Once Yahoo allows email-to-texts, can Gmail and Hotmail be far behind? Our one concern is that this might make spamming cell phones with text easier: we'll certainly be spamming our friends' phones more often than before.

Will this really solve anything, sure it makes it free to send a text message to a phone, which is good - especially for the work place. Being able to send off an address or a phone number to someone on the job would almost be enough to make me want to switch - but replying still costs the cell phone owner. Also, has Yahoo worked out a deal to be able to do this or how are they accessing the phone networks for free? (All I can think of is that it is a ploy by cell phone companies to increase the amount of text messages)
