Samsung's YP-P2 player tastes very iPhoney

samsung_yp-p3.jpg

The iPhone's influence is more than apparent on Samsung's latest MP3 player. From the sleek touchscreen to the icon-based menu to its overall size, the Yepp YP-P3 is definitely an imitator, not an innovator. But that's OK — the question isn't whether it's an iPhone ripoff but whether it's a good iPhone ripoff.

Of course the P3 isn't a phone, but it does have 8 GB for storing music, photos and video, displaying them on the 3-inch display (about a half-inch smaller than the iPhone's). Bluetooth is featured prominently, so you can listen via wireless headphones or just unplug and use the built-in speaker. Not bad, Samsung. No data on price or availability yet, but check out a picture of the touchscreen menu after the jump.

sure, it does have a resemblance to an iPhone, but I wouldn't call it a 'definite imitator' and rather inspired. This type of look was already in the market several years ago, especially with the release of Toshiba Gigabeat series. Also, the icon based menu has been in many touch screen MP3's and PMP's before iPhone was even introduced, such as Cowon D2. By stating that this is an iPhone design ripoff is suggesting that iPhone pioneered sleekness and icon based menus. Apple may have introduced the sexiness of minimalism and simple design with iPod back in 2001, but people ignore the fact that LG's Prada phone, which has a striking resemblance to iPhone, was shown to the public even before Jobs pulled out iPhone for the first time. Besides, based on the demo video, Yp-P2 includes some other interesting GUI menu style.

An imitation. I've heard that this was out first. Does that make it a future imitator, plagerising from the future?

this isn't the YP P3...the title even says YP P2, and the pictures are of the YP P2. The only thing that is from the YP P3 is the built in speakers...get your facts straight! the YP P3 has a FULLY different menu and interface than the YP P2, its like the iPhone interface or iPod Touch but with widgets that can be customized.
