Probo robot is very huggable, will hug you back

probo_hugbot.jpg

Robots tend to fill jobs humans find monotonous or revolting, this weird alien-looking anteater-thing has a humanitarian mission: "Probo" is designed to provide entertainment and support for sick children. The makers of Probo, the ANTY Foundation, have even caught the interest of Bill Gates, who is backing the 'bot as a viable hospital companion.

You might be skeptical as to whether or not a robot could ever comfort a child, but Probo's list of features are impressive: the ability to recognize expressions and thereby emotions, recognize speech, to talk, and — maybe the most important feature — to administer hugs. Probo can exhibit emotions as well, like happiness, sadness and fatigue. Its makers hope that it will be more than just a teddy bear to sick kids, becoming a caring friend.

Anty Foundation is a non-profit organization.Since his youth days, Ivan Hermans & Friends have aspired to realize a dream with the purpose of creating an intelligent huggable robot that is able to play with hospitalized children, thus making the hospital a livelier place.
Staying in a hospital is often a traumatic experience for children. They are separated from their parents and their friends for a while. They enter an unfamiliar environment with a lot of scary devices. The illness combined with pain makes their lives extra difficult. Anty wants to let these children forget their problems for a while.

We realize that putting a smile on a child’s face can be a life changing experience, especially when working with terminally ill children. To accomplish that, the Anty Project uses some of today’s most advanced technology to build one of the most up-to-date robots of its time called "Probo". Probo also has a generous team of doctors and engineers working on it everyday.
At this moment the VUB (University of Brussels) is building its first prototype. To accomplish our goals we stay in close contact with specialised companies and universities that are capable of helping us to create Probo.

We also keep contact with pedagogues, psychologists and people that are working in different kinds of areas. A key contributor is the R&MM research group of the department of electronics and robotics of the University of Brussels. Of course we are collaborating with hospitals in Brussels and elsewhere where Probo could play with the children.
