Japan's a country known for looking towards the future, which is probably why it seems like it's kind of in the future already. In fact, they've already started work on a "replacement" for the Internet, something they hope to have in place by 2020.
Basically, it's gonna be the same as our current Internet, only a hell of a lot faster and much less susceptible to attacks and viruses. Which all sounds good to us, but the Japanese have their work cut out for them if they think there are no American companies with the same goal in mind. But hey, this is the type of competition that we should be happy to see between two companies, as at the end of the day we'll end up with a fast new Internet no matter who gets it done first.

Just as long as it does not turn out to be a scam. We signed up for Hughes.net satalite broadband service, because it did not require a land line to upload data. It has a transmitter to upload directly to the satalite, but it is actually slower than half of what a 56k modem land line can do. Even downloads are only 1/10 the speeds they claimed we would be getting. Their Tech support refuses to help, saying their simply are no guarantees on what our bandwidth will be, so we are locked into a contact at $105 a month for slower crap than we have seen in over a dozen years. It is a nightmare.
We did some research just recently and read they used to be fast over a year ago, but their system crapped out for some reason. I sure would hate to be one of their tech support people an have to field all those calls from angry clients.

A friend of mine went to Japan on an exchange program for college. When he came back he enlightened us to his own internet experience. But forget that whole DSL crap they sell here. He was able to get fiber optic internet installed into his apartment. He said he was BitTorrenting at upwards of 5MB a second that culminated in a full movie download in a little over a half an hour.
So I don't know how they're going to improve upon that. But, if they do, it's going to seriously be crazy.
