House-on-a-Stick at home on land, sea or air

house_on_a_stick.jpg

We like to see houses built in odd locations, and this one's a perfect example. Borrowing ideas from lollipops and billboards, a group of Polish architects designed this dwelling that sits atop a mast, giving you a two-story house that can be built just about anywhere. Its cantilevered design makes it easy to balance on top of a pole, which you see here pile-driven into a lake bed or sea bottom, or even bolted onto the side of a mountain.

The house's narrow depth might result in cramped quarters with the dimensions of a large closet, but with strong enough steel, the cantilever principle could also be used to build it wider. We'd like to place solar panels on one side, and then install an electric motor to slowly and quietly rotate the house to maximize exposure to the sun throughout the day.

That's pretty cool. Here in L.A. where I am we have a house in the hills that was based on a similar design, albeit almost 50 years ago. It's called the "Chemosphere House" and it was showcased in an episode of the original Outer Limits and the house from Charlie's Angels (the movie) where Drew was shot out the window was a studio built set that was based on the Chemosphere.

Haha, I like the last bit about the motorized rotating base to maximize sunlight. I would have liked to see it more open concept with the potential to perhaps slide out some of the paneling to reveal more windows to let light into the upper floor. People (or at least myself) enjoy the light coming in in the morning when I wake up.

That is really cool. What if you built one of these right off the coast of an otherwise expensive, coastal city like LA or San Fransico? Seems like the land, or water rather would be inexpensive since it is otherwise un-developable. Would love to find a way to live in LA without an insanely expensive rent or mortgage.
