Few gadgets in history, if any, have commanded the attention that the Apple iPhone has. Lineups that began almost a week in advance, major media outlets upset over getting snubbed by Apple, people who got advance units becoming 5-minute celebrities — and all for a phone.
But is it merely a phone with some nice iPod functions? Or is it, as many writers ironically name it, the Jesus Phone? We'll have our verdict next week, but until then, follow the link for what others are saying about the iPhone.
"E-mail is fantastic. Incoming messages are fully formatted, complete with graphics; you can even open (but not edit) Word, Excel and PDF documents. The Web browser, though, is the real dazzler." , The New York Times
"After five days of use, Walt … was able to type on it as quickly and accurately as he could on the Palm Treo he has used for years." , The Wall Street Journal
"We were actually 'surprised' that the [YouTube] video loaded as quickly as it did. We were in EDGE, so the quality was downgraded, but the experience was shockingly close to the Apple ad. Score one for the Jobs-man." , Gizmodo
"First, we released it from waist height onto a carpeted floor. Then we let it fall from chest height onto a hard linoleum floor. Lastly, we let it slip from our fingers and bounce onto a concrete sidewalk…. The iPhone not only continued to work after each drop test, impressively it still looked good, too." , PC World
"One thing I've noticed is that there's no way of knowing, besides this up arrow, whether you're in caps lock or in lower case. That's kind of irritating." , Engadget
" On paper, the iPhone's iPod doesn't offer any features not already on the 5G iPod: podcasts, videos, music, and playlists are all here, and content management with iTunes is identical. The difference rests entirely in the iPhone's interface. We've used other MP3 players with touch interfaces, but the iPhone's unique integration of multitouch technology and a graphic user interface put it in a category all its own." , Crave
"When you're transferring content from your computer to the iPhone, you can't simply drag and drop tracks into the phone, in that richly satisfying way you did with your iPod. Moving music and video around is a matter of instructing iTunes to 'sync' the iPhone with one more playlists. The procedure feels clumsy and imprecise." , Time

Good to see a review on a science fiction site. The iPhone's been a long time in coming - I actually predicted it in 1979...

iPhone SchmiPhone! What I want is a fully-functioning phaser. Better yet, a DISRUPTOR!
(That's not the road rage talking. Honest.)
