The Movie Cowboy networked media server/player can play back so many different kinds of media files, it seems like it may not even be legal. Maybe that's why it's not available in the U.S., at least not yet. Unlike the Apple TV set-top box that's restricted to playing just a few video file types, this unit can display almost all video files, and it can even play back unencrypted HD DVD .evo files if you're enough of an outlaw to use that "secret" number to unlock them.
Just install a 3.5-inch hard drive into this $200 box, hook it up to your home network—and that better be a fast network, podna—and you're ready to watch your downloaded or ripped movie collection. It hitches up to your HDTV via the latest HDMI connector, too, and outputs that coveted highest-rez 1080p resolution.
So let's add this up: If you install a $365 1TB hard disk into this Cowboy, you can have yourself a rootin' tootin' home server full of video for around $565. It's a bit more expensive than the similar Archos TV+ just announced a couple of weeks ago, but more versatile with twice the disk space.
