We've just discovered out new favorite time killer: Wikimapia. Launched in spring 2006, the site uses Google's satellite maps as a basis for a clickable map of the globe. Any visitors can add descriptions of places — which can be as big or as small as they want — in any language.
Browsing the University of Alberta campus in my hometown of Edmonton, I was amused at the seat-of-the-pants nature of the wiki, with entries like: "Stadium Car Park: Another parkade nobody can afford to park in. What were they thinking???" and surprised that anyone would add an entry that says, "This is my apartment block and I live in the basement." Uh, good to know.
Looking around the Green Zone in Baghdad was an interesting experience, with about half the entries in Arabic, but some politically charged commentary on a few of the English descriptions. You need to be a registered user to edit entries (it's free), but anyone can add them or comment on them. The entry-box layout is kind if gross, but it's about the only flaw in this very clickable idea.
Thanks to RJ for the tip!
