A few weeks ago everyone was wondering whether Helio's Ocean would be an iPhone killer. This week, reporters are asking the same question about the HTC Touch, which was released in Europe on June 5. The verdict? As with the Ocean, no, probably not. Reviewers had complaints about the lack of keyboard, and expressed ire about Windows Mobile in general. On the other hand, they praised TouchFLO, the application the device uses to tell the difference between a finger and a stylus, something even the iPhone can't do. More thoughts from around the web after the jump.
"The HTC Touch boasts an innovative touch screen and sleek interface, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device." , CNET
"People wanting to listen to their MP3s using the generous 1-GB miniSD card supplied with the phone, or taking and viewing photos using the 2-mp camera will be delighted with Touch - but for those wanting to use their phone to send numerous text messages or emails should look towards HTC's numerous other smartphones, with slide-out qwerty keyboards." , Tech Digest
"When's the last time you saw anyone make the slightest bit of innovation on the input scheme for Windows Mobile? Never? We thought so. But that's just what HTC's done with their TouchFLO app on the new Touch smartphone….underneath all this touchy exterior, you still have the same old Windows Mobile 6. Once you get past the launcher and into the apps, if you hate WM6 you're still going to hate WM6. This is really the most important note. If you can't stand Windows Mobile, the Touch isn't going to change your mind." , Gizmodo
"Sure, fingertip controls are there, but they look to be nowhere as advanced as the iPhone. And plenty of other features are offered within. But they’re all mostly lame and underpowered, and [this discription] to some degree, applies to the iPhone as well." , IT Wire
"Able to distinguish between a stylus tap and the pudgy meat of a human digit, the point is to make it less fiddly to get stuff done. And, as any smartphone owner will know, the damn things tend to be as fiddly as a square-bridged folk violin. That's it for interesting features in this model: it's otherwise a standard "tablet"-like phone" , Wired.com
"Its a straight rip off of the iPhone design. One button on the bottom...etc. Apple should sue HTC. @1, r u kidding, this HTC looks like a fat piece of lard. iPhone is way more sexy." -- , Engadget
"Asked about the iPhone similarities, HTC's Jason Gordon (formerly of Microsoft and Motorola) stated emphatically that the Touch had been in the works for quite some time when Steve Jobs announced Apple's stylish, touch-based handset at MacWorld in January. "It takes years to develop this kind of technology," Gordon said of HTC's TouchFlo." , PC World
