As more universities make the move from brick and mortar to virtual classrooms, keeping a close eye on those that might take advantage of the situation is a big concern. Troy University in Alabama thinks it has found a solution to those who might cheat on online exams in a 360-degree camera to monitor the student's every move.
11,000 cameras, made by Software Secure, lock down the computer during the exam to prevent the student from opening other web pages to find answers, uses fingerprint authentication to make sure a ringer isn't being used, and includes a webcam and microphone that will record a 360-degree view of the room. Should any suspicious activity occur, the camera flags the video and sends it off to the instructor for review. The only thing missing is a ruler to wrap the knuckles of those caught in the act. At $125 apiece, the university won't be footing the bill, instead it's passing the buck on to the student.
