If it wasn't so lame, I'd be tempted to call 2007 the year of VOD. That's because video-on-demand is really coming into its own, what with Amazon Unbox being on TiVo, the Xbox Live marketplace getting HD content, and Netflix still squirreling away with plans of their own. But there's a new player in town, one that's come out of nowhere and has a ton of promise. Learn the name now, as you'll be hearing a lot about it: Vudu.
What is the Vudu? It's a video store in a box, a tiny device that can download movies directly for viewing on your TV. What makes the Vudu so impressive aren't its tech specs, but rather that it already has deals inked with seven major studios, more than any of the other on-demand services. It's a huge step towards having a Netflix-sized catalogue at your fingertips, something that's got to happen eventually, but is taking longer than we'd like. Well, not that long — Vudu is coming this summer. Stay tuned.

A lot of these products are coming out but lining up the right content providers will be important (think of iTunes success). I will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I suspect within two years we will see some real winners. It just isn't clear who has it right, but the Amazon.com/Tivo combo seems intriguing.
