TrekStor MovieStation lets you take your movies with you, plays back HDTV

moviestation_maxi_tu_300a.jpg

The TrekStor MovieStation is a 500-GB hard disk that can play back movies right into your television set without even using a computer. As much as we love home theater PCs, sometimes all we need is a hard drive. You can connect this one to your PC via USB 2.0 and feed your video data into it, and then take it into your living room, home theater or on the road. There you can use its remote control to play back a variety of popular digital movie formats including DivX and XviD.

There are no HDMI ports, so you can't get a direct digital connection from disk to display, and it also lacks an Ethernet connection that would let you feed video files to it over a network. However, it will let you play HDTV (720p or 1080i) through its component outputs, or hook up basic composite video, and digital optical audio (Toslink) as well.

It's nice and compact, designed for mobile use, and its price is right, too. If the $399 500-GB model is a bit too pricey for you, you can step down to a 400-GB or 320-GB model, all the way down to the 250-GB drive which costs a mere $299.
