Smartphone not enough for you? Laptop too bulky? Has Samsung got the gadget for you: The Q1 Ultra is the company's second-generation Ultra-Mobile PC — those pint-size Windows machines that look like big portable media players. The Q1 Ultra ups the specs a bit, coming with either a 600- or 800-MHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, and anywhere from 40 to 80 GB of storage. That's on hard disk, kids, so if you were holding out for a UMPC with solid-state flash memory, you'll be waiting a while longer. A mini QWERTY keyboard is split between the left and right sides on the top half of the frame.
On the plus side, the Q1 Ultra starts at $799. Yeah, that's not exactly cheap, but not bad for something that runs Windows Vista. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are built in, and integrating mobile broadband through AT&T/Cingular's HSDPA network is easy enough (though Samsung has yet to finalize any formal partnership). So you're pretty well covered as far as wireless connectivity goes.

I had a chance to check out the Q1 Ultra in person yesterday. With no mouse, the UMPC comes with a stylus to help with your touchscreen navigating. But on the sample I was using, there was an annoying delay to every touch, making any scrolling or button pushing a frustrating affair. Watching the trailer for Fantastic Four 2, I found the video to be pretty jerky, which was disappointing. This thing is pretty much all screen — if it can't do video right, what's the point? After about 10 minutes of using it, I thought the performance was unimpressive, although the screen was gorgeous.
Still, it's possible the sample I played with was having a bad day, so keep an eye out for a full review of the Q1 Ultra in the future. More specifics aren't possible as company reps were pretty vague on release dates, probably so they can work out any final bugs.
