While the nicotine in cigarettes might be what keeps people hooked, it isn't what's dangerous about being a smoker. No, it's the tarry smoke that the nicotine rides in on that causes cancer, emphysema, and all sorts of other unpleasantness. If you could get people a decent nicotine delivery system, perhaps smoking deaths would go down.
That's the idea behind the eCigarette. It's an electronic cigarette that provides smokers with the nicotine they crave without all those pesky carcinogens. And unlike nicotine gum or patches, it replicates the action of smoking, even providing a vapor to exhale. It's just like the real thing, except it won't rob you of a few decades of life or your voice box. Seems like it's worth the $200 to me.

I remember as old scifi movie that had something similar. The movie was called Project X, based on a novel and was about mind control in the future and stuff but there was a female assistant who offered a lovely girl something called "Synthotine" which was a little capsule that was smoked in an electronic pen shaped device. Man, how weird is it that I remember that.
By profane23 at 3:24 PM ON 05/11/07
That's great, except that nicotine IS a carcinogen. The nicotine is a bigger deal than smoke in general, as studies have shown that smoking some other things (ie. marijuana) do not increase the risk of lung cancer at all.
By timwux at 3:53 PM ON 05/11/07
Ya Profane23... Bob Marley called and he says you have some 'splainin to do.
By roomtone at 5:46 PM ON 05/11/07
Bob Marley died from Skin Cancer. It then traveled to his lungs. It had nothing to do with what he smoked. Please check your facts.
By jimmylegs at 8:20 PM ON 05/11/07
The person who said that nicotine is the problem is right, why don't highway workers get lung cancer from breathing exhaust, or marijuana smokers?
Nicotine itself is not a carcinogen, it is dangerous because it binds to cells in your lungs and causes them to be invisible to your bodies immune system. Normally when a cell turns cancerous, it is destroyed, but the nicotine prevents that. Nicotine replacement is just as dangerous as smoking.
Thats why if you smoke cigs, it's bad. If you smoke cigs and weed it's worse, but if you just smoke pot, your pretty safe. (it's even been shown to slow or reverse the growth of tumors)
By moondogsidewall at 10:44 PM ON 05/12/07
For jimmylegs.....The only thing about MaryJane is that you never know what it was cured with to give it a little extra kick, enbalming fluid, rat poison, etc. That stuff could be even worse than nicotine. Why do any of it?
By verysurprised2 at 7:47 PM ON 05/13/07
for moondogsidewall:
That is riduculous. Nobody would add such things to marijuana if they actually wanted to sell any of it more than once. The only foreign substances found in marijuana in recent history have been added to increase sale weight (limited occurrences of an industrial etching spray in the UK)
By macintyred at 1:26 PM ON 05/14/07
Jimmylegs, do you have a citation for that? Wikipedia doesn't - as far as I can tell, it's a baseless assertation.
I've seen a few articles that suggest nicotine may break down into carcinogens, but even then, the studies don't link the nicotine directly to cancer - only to the possibility that nicotine MAY contribute to the risk.
It seems to me that, given the proven health benefits of nicotine (and yes, there ARE health benefits), removing the other contaminants and lowering the risk of many of the ill effects of smoking should be a good thing.

Ruyan – a cigarette substitute that billed itself as being "healthy, safe, no tar and carbon monoxide-free" – has become shrouded in controversy as consumers condemn it.
The Chinese product that entered the domestic market as a cigarette substitute last May has been shrouded in a safety cloud since a Beijing-based newspaper reported on November 22 that one inhalation of Ruyan contains 18 mg nicotine compared with about 1.2 mg for a typical cigarette.
So people get hooked on this, and not cigarettes. Good for Ruyan, and not the consumer. This product would make it impossible to give up nicotine.
By jshm2 at 12:20 PM ON 07/24/07
zguy1949 what are you flapping your lips about? Do you think Nico gum and patches are for people to give up smoking and nicotine?
The smoking yes, as the tobacco industry has degenerated and has a lot of history, but not a dealers pay maker like nicotine. The tobacco industry doesn't have the clout it used to but the pharmaceutical and drinks industry are between them affecting a lot of people in the health department and making tidy sums in the process.

I love the idea, and as a smoker for thirty yrs, I need this HOWEVER... upon research, I'm finding the cost to be the equiviant of FIFTY dollars a pack of tobacco. Where I pay up to three dollars a pack. Unfortunately, it's cheaper to continue smoking the real thing.
By mike at 12:42 AM ON 07/08/08
To DYEMAC:
Your research was faulty. Equivalent to $50 a pack? That's ridiculous. E-smoking is cheaper than regular smoking. You spend $35-$100 on an e-cigarette, and you can get cartridges for it for less than $1 each. Njoy is good but expensive. My favorite e-cig is from e-cig.com, $35, cheap cartridges, and even cheaper liquid to refill the cartridges. Works great, very affordable.
By ben at 4:02 PM ON 07/16/08
E-cig.com is cheap but I found that the ones at www.SaferCigs.com seem to work better. I think njoy cartridges are way too expensive, but who knows..I've been quite happy with my SaferCig

if you order one of these, be careful not to get lquid that is too high in nicotene to start off with. some people have reported getting really bad head-aches after trying 36mg stuff. otherwise i have vaping one for 6 months now and i have never felt healthier. its true that we dont know what the ingredients might do to us in the lonng run as it is not regulated and it is from china. so really we are all just guinea pigs. WHO will start cracking down on them too. Im awaiting the results of a conference they held in south africa which discussed them. still no news yet. also put up a web-site to keep track of all the latest e-cig news at http://www.e-cignews.com

profane23 - Actually, it's not the nicotine that is the biggest problem. It's all the other crap they put in the cigarettes, all the chemicals. So this would really be an improvement. I would need something like this in order to quit. If it didn't have an awful taste, I think it would work for me.

It's a bit hard reading some of the comments here as they seem to be more adverts and soapboxes then real comments.
I have several e-products. My first was an NJOY (aka 801) pen. I have a 901b and an EVO cigar. The only thing they have in common is that they are all bad on atomizers for anyone who takes more then a half dozen puffs at a time.
My favorite is actually the most simplistic pen. It's not the best looking nor do I use NJOY atomizers any longer even though the batteries seem to have held up fair. Most of the parts I've bought for the NJOY and the 901b are from various suppliers/manufacturers, and I can't seem to find a difference no matter who puts them out as long as the model is the same. The cigar smokes about the same as the pen with the only difference being that the cartridges last longer but the atomizers are far more expensive so it's kinda give or take financially.
That's the other thing. NOONE has just one e-product that I've heard of, unless they hated the first one and personally, I do not find it less expensive when you consider the cost and frequent need for parts.
As to the cancer thing, well, I don't think there's anything definitive but I definitely find a big difference in my sinuses, allergies, and I'm fairly sure that there is no MORE risk then the "analog" counterpart.
All in all, I do believe, even though I do still have an occassional "regular/analog" cig, I will primarily stick with my e-cigs mostly.
By mc417 at 9:22 PM ON 02/26/09
I just bought the NJOY yesterday and I am still getting the feel for it. Althought it works great, I still feel the urge for a reg cig but I am not giving in. I chose the NJOY because the local petro express stores sell the cartridges so in an emergency I will always have access to them. I hope I can make it on this, I have been trying to quit for a long time, gum, mints, chantix, the works. This I feel is my last hope.

E-cigs are an effective way to end your smoking habit in my opinion. Because the cartridges come in different nicotine concentrations, its ideal to slowly decrease your nicotine intake and then end your smoking addicition

Of course they haven't been proven to be safe, but the alternative sure isn't safe. Everyone has to make that determination for themselves, so thanks for an unbiased cover.

Those that don't smoke, get a hobby. This is not meant for you and has no negative impact on you. No matter how you look at it, E-cigs are better than analog cigarettes. There is no argument.I love mine and I'm off tobacco!

My younger brother has the NJOY ($120 with 10 extra cartridges) and I tried it and actually quite enjoyed it. I purchased the Smoking Everywhere E-cig ($99 with 10 cartridges) and so far have not purchased a pack of real ciggs in a week (ciggs here in Tx have gone up to over $6 a pack, some 60 plus dollars a carton as opposed to the $21 equivalent in e-cartridges) . But remember these aren’t supposed to help you quit smoking, they are designed to be a 'healthier' alternative to smoking. I do know a few people who have used a step down method to quit smoking using this. The Nicotine is actually a small part of the "habit" of smoking believe it or not, the body cleans itself of the nicotine in 48 to 72 hours, the REAL habit is the hand to mouth motion that goes with smoking. That’s why people chew straws, chew toothpicks. In turn that’s why E-cigs are becoming so much more popular than nicotine gums and patches, yeah they give you the nicotine but they don't cover the rest of the habit. It’s really something you have to want to do and are open to. You’re not going pick up one of these and stop smoking real ciggs altogether, you’re take a few puffs and light up a real one but the more you use it the less dependant you’ll be on the real ones. This is how it worked for me and I’m sticking with it, it’s so much cheaper and to me, healthier.

If you are holding off smoking eCigs because you think it costs too much. It is only the initial investment that "seems" costly. The starter kit of two cigarette batteries and charger with 5 carts (cartridges that look like a filter and contain nicotine) is around $139. After that the carts are at least half the price of tobacco cigs. 5 carts ($15 or even less if you buy in bulk) equal 8 packs ($38-$40) of tobacco cigs.
Actually the prices are lower for Green Smoke eCigs than most other eCig companies, especially when you factor in that the Green Smoke product is comparatively maintenance free, no refilling of cartridges (the snap on "filter tip" which contains prefilled nicotine in the strength of your choice). These are the state of the art 2-piece design, not the 3 piece of older type models still sold from other outlets. Green Smoke is one of the very few companies that has guaranteed fresh product as well and in stock. I cannot stress enough the importance of ordering from a company like Green Smoke that is guranteed to have your order in stock, in the USA, not on back order like some companies that take your money and then sit on it til they get more product. You can wait for months or risk not getting the order at all. Why go through all that mess when you can order through Green Smoke and get same day shipping, guaranteed?
The initial starter kit which everyone starts with includes two batteries, (2 cigarette bases, the long white end) or you can get a kit with just one battery if you're just a social smoker which is $30 cheaper. But for those who smoke a pack a day of analog cigs (real cigs with smoke) it is practical to get the two battery kit. If you are charging one cig/battery you'll have the other. This way you won't have to revert back to the analog when you need nicotine, you'll have a backup already to go.
After the initial kit purchase of $139.00 (which comes with a pack of 5 carts, the equivalent of 8 packs of cigs), then only the refill cartridges are needed, sold in packs of 5. Each cart (filter tip) is the equivalent of 1 or more packs of analog cigs which is approximately 400 puffs depending on the individual smoker and how much they smoke but Green Smoke eCigs have more puffs per cartridge than the average eCig out there which can range from 14 to 150 puffs so it pays to go with a eCig that gives you more bang for your buck. Not all eCigs are made alike, that's for sure and if you don't care to learn the hard way then the Green Smoke brand is the way to go.
In the long run eCigs are 75% - 50% cheaper than analog/tobacco Cigs, here's some quick math on that:
Say you pay $6 for a pack (20 cigs) of tobacco cigs and you smoke a pack a day you'd be spending $2,190 a year and you switch to eCigs smoking them 100% of the time instead, you'd be saving $1,095 a year. That's serious savings but it's nothing considering the safer alternative of eCigs.
Once you have your starter kit of 2 batteries and charger, the cost of refill cartridges is half the price (even less if you buy in multiple 5 packs or specials) of regular tobacco cigs.On average a 5 pack of cartridges costs $15 (and no tax!) which is the equivalent of about 8 packs because you get more puffs out of a cartridge than a pack of tobacco cigs. 8 packs of tobacco cigs would cost you about $40. So do you see the savings? Don't you owe it to yourself or someone you love to get in on the savings and this alternative way to smoke?
Really, you can see all this and much more with pictures on the website so check it out ok?

It's Time to change the Old Traditional Tobacco smoking to Electronic Vaping. I bought my electronic cig few moths ago and it works great. The best part about my experience is that I've quit traditional tobacco smoking for good & now I choose Vaping rather than smoking. It's very convenient as well, You can pretty much smoke anywhere where tobacco cigarettes are not allowed so Im very pleased with my Electronic Cig for giving me a pass to smoke everywhere :) http://www.Electroniccig.com
