Dell flaunts skinny, beautiful display while touting Display Port standard

dell_displayport.jpg

When we saw this prototype monitor from Dell, it was love at first sight. The company rolled out this high-resolution display at a strategy conference, illustrating how a standard called Display Port will change the way monitors are designed.

Display Port will pass through four times the resolution of HDTV, as well as DVI, HDMI and audio signals. This will be great for multiple-screen configurations. Another advantage is that signals for everything you use on your desktop, including a webcam, microphone, speakers, mouse, and peripherals can travel through a single bidirectional cable with a transfer rate of 1.62 or 2.7 gigabits per second.

The best news is that Dell is not just idly making and showing off a beautiful prototype. It plans to ship this gorgeous half-inch-thick screen later this year. Expect other manufacturers to follow soon thereafter with their own Display Port-compatible gear.
