Pixel Watches look like timepieces from the future

watches_woo.jpg

At first we thought these were mere design concepts that might never actually be for sale, but these Pixel Watches from ODM are available today. You can get one in white, brown or pink, and its electro-luminescent (EL) band intensifies its color by shining through its translucent case. It gets really tricky at night, because starting at 9:00 p.m. until 3 a.m., every hour the watch puts on its own special light show, performing an on-screen scrolling animation.

We had a feeling these pictures might be too good to be true, and that's almost the case, because the site selling these $160 watches notes that the numerals are actually white instead of the Matrix-like green depicted in these photos. Even so, this electro-luminescent tech is getting to be more useful every day, and in this case, it makes this Pixel Watch look like it just dropped out of a passing time machine.

Don't let the pic fool you - it's really an expensive piece of junk. No joke. I just received mine and it's very cheap plastic, including the non-adjustable and feels-like-it's-going-to-snap "bracelet" they've used instead of a normal watch strap. To correct Charlie White - the numerals are NOT white, they are green, just like in the pic, just like it's displaying right now in front of me.

Now don't get me wrong, it looks nice from far away, like some huge zulu bracelet from pluto. But the screen isn't scratch resistant as my house key just made a nice brush against the watch face and now there's a very noticeable scratch. The worst part is the whole LED action - it's not very bright unless you're in a dark nightclub. And the whole "special light show"?? - It's nothing but a quick flash of 3 LED's for less than a second - soooo not impressed.

I'd say if you're a girl with a tiny wrist and don't mind wearing an expensive but gimmicky and gigantic protrusion of a bracelet(?!) - then this is for you. Otherwise, don't waste your money. If I had to recommend something 200 times nicer and more fashionable, I'd say go with nooka - their watches are very VERY nice for about the same price. Plus you get basic watch functions like alarm settings and timers and you could jump in a pool with it on and it'll run forever.

Boo ODM. Boooooooo.
