Intel has unveiled a new concept portable PC called the Metro Notebook that could kick the UMPC to the curb. Ideally designed for the ladies (but I think the fellas are going to like it too), this notebook computer is super thin, only .7 inches thick, and weighs less than a pound. The small size and the Core 2 Duo processor aren't anything new, but the embedded screen on the cover causes this device to stand out. When the notebook is powered down, the embedded screen continues to give the user access to email, eBooks, appointment calendar, and much more. Unlike other embedded screens, this display uses color e-ink technology that only uses power when the page changes. This means you could power this display for days without ever turning on your laptop.
Intel has designed this system to be used primarily as a wireless device with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and WiMax antennas built in. The cover is wrapped in leather, which makes it stylish, and the company also has plans to kick it up a notch by including an inductive charging pad that would allow you to recharge your phone or PDA simply by setting it up on the cover.
Intel says this is only a concept right now, but I already have my wallet on stand by for the day it becomes a reality.
