You think you're so cool, walking around with a cell phone, being able to call whoever you want from wherever you are at any time. Yeah, we're all soooo impressed. Well, Mr. Smartypants, did you ever think of how your behavior was affecting the bees? Yes, bees, the insects that bring us delicious treats such as honey. Ever think of them? I didn't think so. God, you're so selfish.
Well, it turns out that your rampant case of chatty-cathyitis has some bad sidekicks in the bee world, with cell-phone signals being blamed for a widespread case of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). That means that phone signals have been screwing up bees' built-in radar, confusing them and making it so they can't get back to the hive. In many parts of the country, bee populations have plummeted by up to 70%. That sucks. Let's get some bee shields available for our phones, stat!

Biggest crock I ever heard. There is not a single animal that emits radio waves. Bees may use some form of sonar but I don't believe that has been proven. This belongs on that SciFi show Ghost Hunters. Just as stupid and irrational.
By krisnfred at 6:32 AM ON 04/19/07
Hmmm...interesting how one can so easily dismiss something they do not understand. Work for the cell phone industry? Not sure why this should be on Ghost Hunters either. While CCD or Vanishing Hive Syndrome is not yet well understood, it is believed that a potential cause is the honey bee's extreme sensitivity to Electromagnetic Frequencies (such as Cell Phone signals). Look into it...some humans have extreme sensitivities to EMFs causing severe headaches, delusions, and hallucinations. So, that being the case, why is it impossible or a "crock" for EMFs to have such an extreme impact on bees? Just asking.
By Barkinspydar at 6:40 AM ON 04/19/07
A little "research" and it is easy to determine if cell phone EMF is killing bees or misleading them. After Googling and reading several studies, here is the only source I found, a quote from Wikipedia in its entirety,
"Electromagnetic radiation - A 2006 pilot study in Germany suggested that when bee hives have DECT cordless phone base stations embedded in them, the close-range EMF emissions may disorient the bees. In April 2007, news of this study began appearing in major media; at least one article, in The Independent, stated that the subject of the study was "mobile phones", a term usually used to refer to cellular phones. Cellular phones were in fact not covered in the study (though the authors of the paper mentioned them as a possiblity for further study).
At present the link of either cordless or cellular phones to CCD is entirely speculative, and no research exists to support any connection between the two phenomena; nor would such an explanation fit the historical and present patterns of CCD appearance."
I'd say Adam went a bit overboard, no chocolate Dewey button this time!

It seems apparent from the snippy snarky trendy sound-bite tone that this author is more interested in serving stupefying sensation than facts. Cell phones destroying bee populations remains a conjecture, it's only known for sure that incalculable suffering is ahead if bee dependent plants and crops can't get pollinated. As the environment collapses around us with global warming, humanity needs those who can show both brain and heart in the face of tragedy. Come on Adam, after its initial poke the style of your article is numbing, misleading, and depressing. Tell your bosses, and get with the program if you want to remain relevant in your career. I'm not suggesting deadpan journalism either, but something new; your creativity is open here. Listen to NPR, watch Al Gore in his movie, there are some models for real and popular reporting.

BillDrew: so, because you dont know of any animals that dont EMIT RF, you figure there cant be any that are adversely affected by exposure to it? I have one (pseudo)word for you: DUH. Cellphone radiation *definitely* has adverse effects on the human brain, which is much, much larger than a bee's brain (in most cases, anyway!). The smaller the organism, the more quickly it will succumb or display symptoms of an illness. Barkinspydar: the absence of information, or your inability to find it, does not constitute information! The human race has displayed, and still continues to display, a sneering, stupid, dismissive arrogance toward the plight of other species of this world, so much so that many species have vanished altogether, and many more are endangered. Setting aside the moral argument which most humans are far too vain and conceited to comprehend (this was their home before it was ours), it's assinine in the extreme to think that our global ecosystems will continue to support human life perpetually, while all around us we continue to destroy other species which, in their myriad forms of activity, make the place habitable and sustainable for us in the first place. Unfortunately, I don't see a very long or bright future for us, as too many other ignorami share the same "screw 'em, they're just insects" attitude, or the "what I dont know cant hurt me" attitude. Now *that* is what I'd call "stupid and irrational"...

In an advanced Google search displaying only incidents of "Colony Collapse Disorder" I found 167,000 articles in a matter of seconds. In one such source I found this bit of info: Scientists have found magnetic material in the bodies of the bee that could be disturbed by bee cloning causing a problem in the ability of the bee's mechanism in orientation. This article also mentions rising cell phone use as a potential cause of the interference of the bee's homing system. Regardless of whether or not bees can "emit radio waves" having magnetic materials in the body can cause extra sensitivity to EMFs. Again, I did a quick search and found a plethora of info on this.
Here is the site address where I found this information:

I do not know if cell phones are killing the bees but something definitely is.It should concern everyone ,got news for you , all the bees die so do we.How do you think the food you eat gets pollinated & it affects every living thing on this planet .We need to find out what is causeing the phenomna
& correct it.
By JOEKOZY at 2:14 PM ON 04/21/07
The UV spectrum from our sun is what I think is the contributing factor to the missing bees, along with all the weather manipulation by the armed services.Ed Dames, remote viewer has said the same on am radio stations across the country.
By TreLore at 10:52 PM ON 04/21/07
I agree with the other responders. I dont know if it is the Millimeterwaves produceds by some celphones causing bees to die. But something diffently is and if they die then we die of starvatgion. This thing has farmers scared. Adam if they are scared then you need to be. We need to find the cause and stop it.

My husband was telling me about this today and I find the while thing pretty far fetched. He is a notorious dooms dayer.
Here are some things I have learned about CCD by searching the internet.
Reports of similar die offs are documented in beekeeping literature, with outbreaks possibly occurring as long ago as 1896. (there were no cell phones then folks)
The honey and bee bread left in the colony is avoided by predators that usually attack a colonies. This suggests that something has contaminated the bees stored food supply and has caused them to leave.
The colony is not completely abandoned because the queen and many young adult bees remain but are reluctant to consume "provided food supplies".
Many people don't realize that most commercial bee keepers feed there bees sugar syrup and protein supplements. Since the remaining bees are reluctant to feed on this is suggests there might be a problem with the food supply.
I know several people who keep bees in there back yards and none of them "feed' there bees anything. They are "not" having this problem.
A lot of commercial bee keepers "rent" there bees out to farmers which means they pick up the hives, move them to the farmers fields and then move them back. I've been told by people that don't do this to there bees that its very stressful to them and quiet often a large percentage of the bees can be lost.
Do your own research and don't believe everything the media tells you.

here is another interesting article blaming pesticides for the problem.

You don't deserve honey !!!
You have your High Frutose Corn Syrup drink up.
You will never miss it just like you never miss the fact that SAC had never been told to stand down until 9/11. SAC had protected the U.S. Airways since the 1960's never once standing down competely.
You know nothing of your own Countrys History and you have given it away too.
So do without honey you don't deserve it !

why not compare cell tower installed dates to collony collapse in same area ? should be able to access that data without an act of congress (they don't seem to concerned) seems plausable to me!!
