Well, that rumored upgraded Xbox 360 we told you about a couple of months ago looks like it's becoming a reality. Microsoft unveiled the new Xbox 360 Elite late last night, a black version of its popular console loaded up with a 120-GB hard drive and HDMI outputs.
It's set to hit stores on April 29th for $480, which isn't too much of a price increase for all that extra hard drive space and the improved connection. For you poor schulbs who are now stuck with a suddenly-outdated Xbox, you'll be able to drop $180 on an external 120-GB hard drive for your older version as well, although that's kind of an insane price for so little space. The really exciting stuff may be to come, however, as Microsoft is said to be announcing "exciting partnerships" later this week that might turn the Xbox into more of a multimedia hub, really using all that extra space. We'll have to wait and see about that.

Great... now if only Sci Fi will make the HD version of BSG available on the XBox Live Marketplace. What's the holdup? Can you say "target audience?"

TiVo won all those patent lawsuits before, I hope MS doesn't try to make this into a DVR. Nobody does it better then TiVo. (Although I'm rebooting mine now because there was an error..)

Love to see cool products evolve. I'm typically a patient consumer and wait for rev. b products and first round price adjustments.
However, this rev. b product slightly misses the mark for me (with my opinion being worth at least $480).
It's hard to think of the XBOX 360 and its most comparable competitor, the Sony PS3, without considering the Blu-ray / HD-DVD format battle. I understand Microsoft's caution in not committing to either format with a built-in HD format player. Sony is taking a risk by including Blu-ray with the PS3. However, that risk is reduced with each and every unit sold. For every Blu-ray player out there, that's one more consumer who now has the option to purchase a Blu-ray disk. I believe Microsoft's external drive approach has dealt a blow to the HD-DVD camp.
I have no doubt that everyone has their opinions on this issue. I only offer mine here on the remote chance that it will be seen by some MS marketing folks and considered as having merit.
Sony obviously has a larger stake in the success of Blu-ray than Microsoft has in HD-DVD. So, it's not surprising that the PS3 is only available with BR built-in. My belief is that the correct counter-blow for the XBOX 360 should have been a removable and upgradable INTERNAL mechanism. Get your HD-DVD drive today, that format wins - good for you, it doesn't win - pick up a Blu-ray or a multi-format drive later. At least your 360 isn't stuck with an albatross. Aside from the zero-footprint and tighter integration, an internal mech is cheaper for the consumer. The 360 already has that ungainly external power brick, who wouldn't prefer to eliminate another ugly block hanging off their system?
With limited HDMI port availability on our over-priced home theater systems (well, not mine since I didn't buy one yet), I would think that most folks would want to use that port with the most feature rich, flexible device they can find.
Take my opinions as you will. Just know I haven't had time to play a video game in over 4 months! I'm almost embarrassed that I see these new gaming consoles more as media centers than VGCs. It's likely an age-thing.
With warm regards.
