Nvidia brings us the future of graphics

quadrofx_5600_front.jpg

Apparently there has been an insanely large leap forward in computing technology and it somehow has been kept under wraps. Remember when I reviewed Dell's Quad-core XPS computer and said that it was too powerful for today's applications? That was a computer with four cores. Yeah, it's basically top of the line and as fast as you can go.

Well, guess what? Nvidia has something a bit better. Their new professional grade graphics cards have 128 cores. Yes, 128. That's the equivalent of 128 1.35-GHz processors all working together at the same time. While it's aimed at graphics and video pros, I'm pretty sure it would do a pretty good job at running Far Cry as well. While they're pretty pricey, coming in around $2,000, just the fact that this technology exists means we'll see gaming rigs loaded with it in the not-too-distant future. Get ready for a quantum leap in graphics.

I think you are confused. this has a 128-bit processor, not 128 cores. It is probably a 4 core chip.

Not, it is really a 128 cores device, the exact width is not completely apparent from NVIDIA documents, but probably 32 bits, both integer and floating point.

No it has 128 pixel shader cores. Also, this card will never be a great "gaming" card due to the fact that Nvidia doesn't make the drivers to run the card for gaming. So, no we will not be seeing it in "gaming rigs" in the future. If you currently want a top end video card for gaming and don't use monitor resolutions over 1280x1024 go with Nvidia's 8800gts 320mb. ATi (my favorite) is releasing their new high-end video cards in May.
