Japanese rescue robot scoops you to safety

japanese_rescuebot_scoop.jpg

Here's the latest in Japan's obsession with robots: an unmanned rescuebot designed to literally scoop people out of situations where trained rescuers might find themselves at risk as well.

The Robokiyu gets near the person needing to be rescued so it can grasp his clothes near the shoulder. Then it drags him onto an attached scoop so it can cart him off to safety (hmm… remind you of anything?). The rescue robot is getting some shakedown time in with Tokyo's firefighters, but if for some reason it fails its trials, perhaps it can be find work alongside fellow robots carrying the elderly.
