Amazon and TiVo make set-top downloading a reality

unbox tivo

I've been begging for a decent set-top content downloading service to bring internet video downloads to the TV for some time now, assuming that Netflix would be the one to get the job done. It looks like our friends over at Amazon went ahead and stole Netflix's thunder, teaming up with TiVo to bring their Unbox service into the living room.

The details are a bit scant at the moment, but it looks like people with Series 2 and Series 3 TiVo units will get access to the service (sorry DirecTV customers, you get left out in the cold on this one). You'll attach your TiVo to your Amazon account and you'll be able to download movies and shows to your box via your broadband connection. If you don't want to take up space on your TiVo with all your purchases, you can just delete them. You're allowed to redownload anything you've purchased in the future, so you won't get screwed out of your money. Overall, this looks like a pretty awesome first step in the world of living room movie downloads, and I can't wait to see how the market reacts.
