Verizon unveiled their new VCast Mobile TV service here at CES this week, delivering streaming, live television to cell phones in the U.S. for the first time. The service, launching sometime in the next couple of months, will offer seven or eight channels of live TV (ESPN is still under negotiations). It'll work on two new phones from LG and Samsung, both of which offer surprisingly good quality for streaming mobile video.
Is this the wave of the future? Maybe. It depends how much people want to watch TV on a tiny screen. It'll certainly be convenient for times when you're stuck waiting around somewhere, such as in an airport or while in the backseat of a car, but there's only so long you can watch video on such a small screen. One could argue that it'll be convenient for doing things like checking the score of a football game, but mobile Internet already allows us to do things like that pretty easily. It'll certainly be interesting to see how well this new service catches on when it's made available to consumers.
