I'd like to introduce the Samsung VLUU i70, a sexy 7.2-megapixel camera with a lot going on inside the slick casing. As point-and-shoots go, this camera has fairly familiar features, with 3x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD screen, face recognition, shake reduction, and a rather generous ISO of 1600. However, what brings me to full attention is the built-in HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) transmitter which taps into HSDPA cellular networks like Cingular's, allowing any photos taken with the i70 to be uploaded directly — and wirelessly — to a computer or website from wherever you are, with no need to hunt for some finicky Wi-Fi signal. Using the same technology, the camera can also receive text messages.
Samsung doesn't stop there. The i70 also has the ability to store and play MP3s, as well as shoot and play MPEG-4 videos on its LCD screen. I'm by no means a purist, but these features seem less important than, say, the convenience of being able to talk to whomever you just sent that photo. Maybe next time Samsung will build a phone into the camera — wouldn't that be ironic? No word yet on when this product will be available in the U.S.A.

The question is, does this require a contract through the HSDPA carrier?...More »
