Netgear HD media receiver tunes into YouTube

netgear digital entertainer hd

Highlight of the new products Netgear touted this morning was the Digital Entertainer HD (Model EVA8000), a media receiver that promises to give you "any content, anywhere, anytime." So what does that really mean? Essentially it's media receiver — a box that goes by your TV or home theater that relays over content from your PC and the Internet — with a few new tricks for 2007. One is an HDMI conection so it can handle 1080p content, the overhyped highest of high-def formats. Another is a direct "channel" for YouTube, which is probably a little more useful. There are also menu items for weather, news, and other things you connect to it, like your iPod. And if you have more than one of them, you can have media "follow" you from room to room with a couple of clicks of the remote control.

Nothing wrong with this gadget, though it's more of an amalgam of technologies we've seen before than a breakthrough. And there is such a thing as too much choice, so we can't really see it being super popular. But if you'd prefer to watch YouTube on… well, the tube, you can pick it up by April for $349.
