MediaFLO lets LG take the telly to your cellie

Verizon is due to launch its MediaFLO TV broadcast service, enabling you to watch live TV — not streaming video, but live, like on an actual TV — on a cell phone. MediaFLO is planned to debut in the next couple of months to about half of Verizon's markets. Transmitted in a 6-MHz slice of the 700-MHz bandwidth (old UHF channel 55), MediaFLO can broadcast up to 20 channels to a phone.

To watch MediaFLO TV you'll need a MediFLO phone like the new LG VX-9400 above, which has a 2.2-inch screen that swivels perpendicular (called a "T-bar") for widescreen TV viewing, revealing the keypad beneath. Multitaskers can also text or chat while watching TV. Aside from TV, the 4.04 x 1.93 x 0.73-inch, 4.06-oz. VX-9400 is an EV-DO VCast music phone with a 1.3-megapixel camera, an MP3 player with stereo Bluetooth, and a microSD card slot.

Now all we need is to have the camera pointed at our faces and live, bidirectional video transmissions to present the Picturephone that was promised over fourty years ago.

I prefer live TV over playback of prerecorded videos, for which I have DVD and Pay-per-View to watch at home.

I wonder when LG (who also make home appliances) and Verizon (my phone and Internet supplier) will join their resources to offer the home-based Picturephone or Videophone. Using DSL, video at home is more viable. But as usual, the demand has to start somewhere to increase the offers. Then other phone manufacturers and cable providers will join in. We Jetsons fans will be happy.

Good looking? That phone is absolutely fugly. It looks like something from a bad 70s made-for-TV scifi film. I've crapped better looking things than this.
