Look sir, droids! R2-D2 projector adds Force to your home theater

R2D2_DVD_projector.jpg

If there's a normal, unpretentious home theater projector out there in the universe, this is the projector it's farthest from. Star Wars fans will be knocking each other over to get to Nikko's R2-D2 home theater projector, which shoots video out of its eye (it would have been perfect if it used the hologram-projector port, though). The resolution is only 800 x 600 (south of high-def), but speakers are built in, and so is a DVD player as well as an iPod dock. And it wouldn't be R2 if he didn't move — you can make him follow you anywhere in your house via the remote control.

And have we mentioned the remote control? A replica of the Millenium Falcon, it's a riot in its own right, with controls that pop out of the engines in the back. Too sweet. For that extra Jedi atmosphere, be sure to pick up a Darth Vader popcorn machine. It could be in stores as early as the spring for a little more than 2 Gs. Enjoy some video of R2 in action after the jump.

That is just cool in general. Forget the action figure collecting basement ogres wanting one, an actual R2-D2 robot is sweet 'cause robots are cool, and projectors are cool, so this thing is double sweet. If it looked like anything else but was still a robot that could follow you around the room it would still be popular. The hamburger patty falcon remote, not so cool, that is too geek. A remote that looked like a movie prop remote would be the way I would lean. For the money you would think they could kick up the projector resolution. At $2000 it is a bit expensive to cut up, but I think hackers are going to have a field day with this little guy.

I agree with the previous comment: its just cool. I also agree, that for the price, the resolution could be bumped up a bit. This is the kind of thing I would want to have out in the house, for when friends come over and we're doing a movie night, but with that resolution, we'ld be better off just using the TV. It will be interesting to see if the price comes down or the resolution goes up. The iPod feature would be kind of neat for patio parties, too bad I don't use iPods.

I wish there was some comment on the sound quality and how loud it will go. I know it would not make a good home theater sound device, but even for playing the Ipod indoors or out? 30 watts is not a lot, and I find these stats will drastically vary where it comes to actual performance. I have seen cheap stereo systems advertise on the box as having 330 watts RMS, yet did not sound any better than a true 30 watt system. Back when I was young I could rock a dance hall with a 60 watt per side Sansui receiver. Getting back to the key issue of the projector, this has an odd pixel rating that is more geared to a computer resolution, instead of for TV use. Is there also a plug for connecting to your PC?

All our laptop batteries must pass stringent quality control tests that ensure they will work with your laptop computer.
