If you're one of those tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists worried about black helicopters spying you on the night, I have good news and I have bad news. The good news? There probably aren't black helicopters spying on you. The bad news? There will soon be a small army of space blimps spying on you instead.
Yes, everyone's favorite death dealer Lockheed Martin has been tapped by the gov to create a bunch of airships to float 12 miles above the surface of the earth to keep tabs on "homeland security." If all goes according to play there will be 11 of Lockheed's High Altitude Airships keeping their eyes on us by the end of the decade. They'll suck up juice from the sun using built-in solar panels, keeping them aloft for over a year. The high-res cameras installed will be able to take in the area between NYC and Toledo at once, making that Reynolds Wrap hat seem like a less than adequate defense.

CORRECTION:The original version of this article misreported the altitude of the blimps as 600 miles. The correct altitude is 12 miles. 600 miles is the diameter of the area that one of the blimps can monitor.

DO THE MATH, GENIUS... From an altitude of 12 miles, an object at the perimeter of a 600-mile diameter circle would be viewed at an angle of less than 2.3 degrees above horizontal. What you can effectively observe from 12 miles up is a circle of 600 sq. miles AREA, with a viewing angle at the perimeter of less than 45 degrees. The diameter is about 27.6 miles, and people / vehicles / etc more than 7 miles from the center will most likely be blocked by higher features like trees and buildings.
