Best bike lock ever?

locksit

Here's a clever solution for bicyclists who don't feel like carrying around a bulky lock with them. This Bicycle Security system has a lock built into the back of the seat, so when you roll up to a bike stand you just have to fold the seatpost down and lock the wheel and seat up. No more lugging a hefty lock around.

This is a great idea, especially for cyclists in cities like NYC where bikes get stolen in about 30 seconds if they aren't locked up properly on the street. Let's get this implemented in new bikes from now on, OK? Heck, even just sell the seatpost as an add-on for current bikes and it'll do great. Let's make it happen.

Okay, I see how you lock it to itself; but how do you lock it to a rack, or bench, or tree, or whatever, to keep the "bad guys" from just taking the whole bike?

Pretty decent idea. But, as DudeTheMath said, it's not going to keep someone from stealing the whole bike. Another idea would be to have a retractable cable that comes out of the frame, instead.

In Japan every bike has a system like this, and while somebody could steal the entire bike, then they have to pretty much cut it apart to get it to work again. They have it so it just locks the wheel in place though; you don't have to fold down the seat.

Yeah someone still could pick it up and walk off with it, but think about it. Someone would notice. If you were carrying a bike around with its wheel locked in place, youd draw a little attention. Admittedly though, an anchor might not be a bad idea. Maybe they could do both, have the wheellock, and the retractable cable. For extra security :)

You're aware that this leaves the front tire open for the taking?

And for those of you who don't see how this goes around a rack, this is simple: you fold the seat where the rack is inside the circle-ish enclosure when it's locked.

Of course, still... the front tire's gone. And vandals might well slash tires/seat when they realize they can't get it.
