Apple's got a brand new phone… and name

apple_iphone_inhand.jpg

The rumors are true. Yes, there will be an iPhone this year. And, yes, it will be called iPhone, despite reports to the contrary. It comes in 4-GB ($499) and 8-GB ($599) models. The iPod interface looks pretty great. The click wheel is gone in favor, as expected, of a 3.5-inch touchscreen. Check out the way it scrolls through albums here.

The phone service will be through Cingular, and Cingular only. It allows for conference calls, among other things. Instead of having a slide-out keyboard for SMS and e-mail, the phone has a touchscreen keyboard that predicts your words and corrects spelling. E-mail service is through Yahoo but maps are through Google. Widgets galore.

It's skinny. It has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as a 2-MP camera. It launches in June. Oh, and Apple Computer has changed its name to Apple Inc., because it's also a music and cell-phone company these days. Happy now? What are you here for? Check it out for yourself on Apple's… er, Apple Inc.'s updated website.

Looks like that "rumors to the contrary" quip above has now been contradicted via legal action from Cisco: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070110/ap_on_hi_te/cisco_apple

Looks like Jobs is getting the Gate's syndrome, "I'll do whatever I want, to hell with other companies rights!" Hope Cisco wins, and wins big! That might bring Jobs back to reality.

I think they should just make this an ipod. I can't stand using touch screens for typing anything and I think that phones should always have physical buttons for typing since typing always has and always will have a feeling aspect to it. How often do you look at your keyboard when you are typing? Probably only to find the position your hands are supposed to be.

What they need to do instead of combining it into a phone is just slap this touchscreen technology onto a 30 or 80 gig ipod. I would definately buy that.

I love the interface how you can browse through the albums by swooshing your finger across the screen. And then once you find the album you want, you just point to it. That makes sence if the screen is always changing (IE viewing albums). But when you are typing something with buttons that are in the same place, you don't want to have to look at where you are putting your fingers to type it.

It's like using a mouse. It's great for browsing and selecting, but for typing? Who would rather have a virtual keyboard that you have to click? Everyone would choose a keyboard.

By the by, I still like apples pruduct better, besides the fact that it is a real product and not just a design. I just thought that it was interesting.

However, to those that are upset about the touch screen only keyboard, I would like to point out the vast array of ipod accessories. For those few who will want to use this more as an email maching, I am confident that it will take all of five minutes from the time you can buy it til the time you can plug a little keyboard in.

In comparison, who would rather have a keyboard permanently attatched to their phone, whether or not you need it.

Its alot harder to remove a keyboard as a consumer then to add one.
