Remote webcam shuns AC power, has sunny disposition

solar_webcam.jpgForget AC power! Digital Xtractions' SCIRC t1 webcam plugs right into the sun, joining the legions of solar-powered gadgets out there. For a ghastly $450 you can get your hands on the camera, but the solar panels are an additional buy, starting at $150. So far: $600. Now add another $60 a year to pay for the high-speed cellular modem through Cingular's EDGE network.

On the plus side, you can sit anywhere in the world and let this creepy gadget do your dirty work: Keep tabs on a job site, an ex's place, or your beach house — the video (or stills) is transmitted to the Web. However, this isn't the only Net-connected webcam out there, and because of the price I would suggest researching other options unless you have already sworn off power outlets forever.
