On-wall player somehow makes CDs look cool

square_cd_player.jpg

We all thought CDs were a lost form of music, but the on-wall Square CD player begs to differ, turning your discs into visual and audible art. Designed by Matteo Bertanelli, Michele di Monte, Chiara Cremona, and Andrea Biraghi (it took four people to design this gadget), the concept player looks like a simple white Corian square (think kitchen countertop) when turned off. Once you power it up up, some serious ambiance emerges, thanks to a softly lit background. And don't worry too much about wires — the square acts as a speaker, too.

The interface, only visible when turned on, is sensitive to touch, so there are no buttons to detract from the minimalism. The design really pulls on your iHeart strings with its "look at me — I'm way cooler than your iPod" aesthetics, even if Square CD is too big to fit in your pocket for music on the go. As hot as it looks, who wants to go back to busting out their cracked and scratched jewel cases?
