Those icons of New York City, the yellow cabs, are slated to get updated into the 21st century in the very near future. Planned upgrades include the ability to pay with credit cards (something that only a few cabs can currently do), and a built-in touch screen that will allow riders to check the weather, look up restaurant reviews, and follow their progress on a map. The last feature is said to help people if they forget something in a cab, as they can let the taxi commission know what route they took and can find the exact cab they were in easily.
I say bring on the upgrades. Not that I take cabs all too much due to my fantastic stinginess, but being able to pay via credit card whenever I hail a cab is sure to make those late, intoxicated nights simpler. Also, lord knows that I love touch screens, so anywhere you put them I am bound to like more. The new cabs are due to start hitting the streets in a week or two, but who knows how long it will take for them to become the majority of the fleet.
