SanDisk and Sony are working on a Memory Stick Pro-HG format that puts the old Memory Stick Pro format to shame. Yes, the "HG" actually means something: the new Sticks are designed to provide high-speed continuous writing (up to 60 MB per second) to handle the growing masses of impatient, digital entertainment-addled fanatics.
Of course, a high writing speed doesn't mean much unless the format has room to store mountains of high-def video and digital photos. Well, it just might. The theoretical limit on the format is 32 GB, though Sony qualifies that with, "this data does not guarantee that Memory Stick Pro-HG 32-GB media will be introduced to the market." Hey, at least we know it can be done. Sometime in the next year we will see the first of this format hit the shelves, but since there's no actual Pro-HG product yet, there's no way to know how long we'll have to make do with small capacities like 4 gigs.
