LED holiday lights might save your life

led-Christmas.jpg

What kind of idiot would put up a flammable evergreen tree as a holiday decoration and drape it with electric lights and wires? Oh, right, that would be me. But my living room may get a little safer with LED Christmas lights. Using light-emitting diodes in lieu of incandescent bulbs, they dissipate less energy in the form of heat. That makes them less likely to cause a deadly fire. More benefits: They cost 80% less to run, and while that advantage is partly offset by their higher initial cost, the reduced power consumption also fights global warming.

To get an idea of what's available, check out the sites of Home Depot, Brookstone, or these people — but if you're in a hurry, try their brick-and-mortar counterparts or your local hardware stores. Oh, and if you're not in the market for LED Christmas lights, there are also LED menorahs for Hanukkah, ranging from cheap and cheerful to high end.

The myth about Christmas tree lights setting trees on fire was busted on Mythbusters. The lights can't set a tree on fire, but a short definitely can...

These lights help fight global warming?!! Give me a break. The entire global warming thing and man's impact on the temperature of the earth is science fiction.

I have seen these lights in stores since the end of November. I am very glad that this old technology (developed in the late 1960's) has finally matured well to really replace incandescent bulbs (even Tom Edison would approve), in automobiles and in homes. I still remember when Hewlett-Packard sent me in 1974 my first red LED as a sample by mail, when they we costing over one dollar each. Now I expect to see Organic LEDs invade and replace the LCD computer monitor and TV screens in the near future. OLEDs are already being used in small screen applicatios, such as cellphones, so it has started small. LCDs began small in digital watches, just like LEDs had (remember the Pulsar?).
