Fancy rear-view mirrors automatically darken to keep you safe

gentex_rearview.jpg

Nothing is more irritating when you're driving at night than getting some jackasses brights shone in your face from your rearview mirror. Well, I guess there are lots of other, probably more irritating things that could happen to you while driving at night, but bear with me. I'm trying to make a point here.

What I was getting at was that there's some fancy new mirrors out there that automatically adjust when an idiot in a Hummer tailgates you with his high beams on, darkening so you don't get blinded and plow into a gaggle of orphan schoolchildren on a fun run. The mirrors, created by Gentex, are an option on the new Audi TT Coupe. And really, if you're buying a car that fancy why skimp on the bonus features? That's the whole point of buying an ostentatious car like that: showing off the cool features to people you sucker into riding around with you.

I have to say that I love auto-dimming mirrors. You don't realize how great they are until you get stuck in a vehicle without them. They really cut down on the glare.

Hah, I just flip the dimming switch on the bottom of the mirror. No auto dimming for me!

Wow you have dimming switches on your outside mirrors too?! Kind of hard to reach the passenger side isn't it? Sounds like a safety issue. Well, to each their own, I'll stick with my auto-dimmers.

Don't fight technology - embrace it. Remember horses used to get everyone to work once too.

This technology is old. I had this in my 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis.

My wife always wanted a mirror that would direct the high beams into the eyes of the driver behind. Now THAT would be a technology!

Ford, and their off spring, have had this technology for a decade now. My '96 Explorer Limited (built summer of 1995) has this technology in the rear view mirror. A side mirror option would have been nice too though.

I had a 1990 Caddy with a rear view mirror that reacted to the brightness of headlights behind you by adjusting the angle of the mirror.
