SHIFT: 6 reasons to pass on the PS3 this year

Don't Buy a PS3

I haven't hidden the fact that I think the PlayStation 3, Sony's next-generation game console, is way overpriced and the addition of a Blu-ray drive is one of the biggest blunders Sony has ever made. That doesn't mean, however, that I think the PS3 is a lousy product or won't do well. It's going to have some amazing games, and the graphical capabilities are impressive to say the least. I think any serious gamer will want one, and despite the price and manufacturing issues, Sony will almost certainly sell tons of them. However, buying one this year soon after it's released would be a huge mistake. Anyone considering picking up a PS3 should do themselves a huge favor and wait until next year. Let me run down for you a list of reasons why the PS3 is this year's must-avoid holiday purchase.

1. It's freaking expensive
The most obvious reason not to buy a PS3 is its massive price tag. Are you really prepared to drop $600 plus $60 per game for a new console? And that's just the price you'll pay if you somehow manage to get one from a store; eBay prices sure to be astronomical. The cost is bound to drop in the next year or so, and even if it doesn't, you're sure to be able to pick it up used for a discount after a few months if you have some patience. We're not talking about a small amount of money here — I know fiscal responsibility isn't fun, but you'll thank yourself later.

2. It'll be hell getting one
With a mere 400,000 systems slated for release in the States this holiday season, you've got your work cut out for you if you don't already have a preorder for a PS3. Prepare to sit in line for many, many hours in the freezing cold outside a Best Buy somewhere with a good chance of still not getting a system after that wait. Online, it's going to be an eBay free-for-all, and it isn't going to be pretty. Wait until next year when you can casually walk into a store and buy one without paying a price-gouger.

3. The best games are coming out next year
Face it: Sony doesn't have a killer launch title. Sure, Resistance: Fall of Man and Call of Duty 3 look cool, but they aren't console sellers. Next year, however, will have the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Final Fantasy XIII — you know, the games you're buying the system for. Furthermore, it takes time for developers to really figure out how to get the most out of a new system's potential. The PS3 probably won't hit its stride for another year. Why not just wait 'til then and save the $60 per title you're gonna blow on games you don't care as much about just so you have something to play on your new system?

4. You need an HDTV for it to be worthwhile
If you don't have an HDTV, you won't be getting the experience you're paying so dearly for with the PS3. Let's be honest here: the games aren't much more than PS2 games with facelifts. And if you have a standard-def set, the games aren't going to look all that "next-gen." Wait 'til you upgrade to HD. And guess what? HDTVs are sure to continue dropping in price over the next few months as well.

5. A chance of first-run bugs
Look at all the manufacturing problems Sony has been having with the PS3 and the Blu-ray drive inside. There's a chance that later models, once the kinks are worked out, will have longer lifespans than the very first boxes. The first batch of PS2s had trouble with their optical drives, and those weren't the fancy, finicky Blu-ray drives the PS3 is loaded with. Microsoft's Xbox 360 had its share of issues as well, with Microsoft being forced to reimburse gamers who needed repairs or replacements of their first-run system and even including an upgraded CPU in later models. Since the PS3 isn't out yet, we don't know if first-run units will be any less reliable than later ones, but history shows us that it often pays to wait for the second batch. Reduce the odds of getting stuck with a bricked machine and wait until the manufacturing process is going smoothly… next year.

6. Cheap Wiis for everyone!
If you really must have a new console this holiday season, there's always the Wii. Sure, it doesn't have the graphical prowess of the PS3, but it's half the price and should be a hell of a lot easier to come by this year with 4,000,000 units shipping worldwide. It also has The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as a launch title, which is a console seller if there ever was one. Satisfy that console craving by getting the one with plenty of available units, no bloated price tag, and no requirement of a $2,000 TV.

I have to say I disagree with everything you say...or at least most of it. Lets see the reasons why one shouldn't act upon the contents of this article. I just might be lucky that you approve the post. This would be the sign of freedom of speech I guess since I wont wtite anything defamatory or profane.

1. If the PS3 is overproced then you must compare the cost of the Xbox 360 399.00 premium and add the additional cost of the HD DVD 199.00 (projected). Well that to me is 600.00 just aout right? Now the Wii may be less but it doesnt upscale does it? It also doesn't play HD in any form. Hmmm.

2. It will be hell getting one. Wasn't that the same for the XBox 360. Some of us have to wait. If you want it go out and try. No harm in trying right. And if you can why not. Its your life after all and your money as well. If you really want one you can eventually get one. its not like you could find a XBox 360 in every store 2 weeks after launch...even 6 months unless you settled for the downgraded version.

3. The best titles arent coming out till next year. for me this isn't even compelling as an argument. Have you played the 360 games? they're a fraction better than the XBox. The "killer" title Halo3 isn't even out yet. Tsssss...C'mon now. Who are you foolin'?

4. Hey some of us have HD. And as far as upscaling...does it really matter? Do you want me to keep waiting until everyone can have one. C'mon now. if your gonna use this argument than include the 360 as well. the Wii is the only exclusion. Seems like there is a bias here.

5. At leatst you include the 360 in this one. Yeah there may be problems, but lest we forget, the reason for the delay was for qulity issues as well as production. There wasn't a rush to market. The battery issue...well that's a different unit, plant, and operation entirely now isn't it? If we include this then we should include all of the bugs and security issues with Microsoft software now wouldn't we?

6. As for me, I would like to know if you've played any of these units? Obviously promoting a unit such as the Wii means you've played it right? Or did you recomend buying a Hyundai when the first came out? Ok well that's not fair now is it since Nintendo made games before? So how about this...Did you recommend to others to buy a Ford Pinto? After all ford has been making cars for a longer time than nintendo with games, right? If you think about it...really now...how much jumpin' around are you gonna do playing a game? it will get old after a while. The Wii is just a novelty and for certain kids will ove it...but the adult gamer which starts at 13....nah...cause its not really cool to be jumpin around like you have a sword in your hand to imitate game play. only for a dance game will this work...uh PS3 has that too, right?

So those are my comments...will you let the readers see it is the real question. I'll post it on mine as well to see if you do. Are you credible?

I have to say I agree with everything you say.

HD isn't that important for game consoles right now. The sets are absurdly expensive, so you have to figure in the cost of $1000+ television with whatever "HD" console you want.

When I want to play "HD" games, I play them on something called a "computer" which has been "HD" since video cards supported resolutions above 640x480 (somewhere in the early 90s). Additionally, I can spend $600 upgrading said computer, and get better looking games than any game console. If not today, than certainly 6 months from now when the PS3 is no longer cutting edge hardware. I've never seen a Playstation game that was worthy of buying the console for. I played Grand Theft Auto on the PC and it looked far better (in HD!!!!) than it did on the PS2.

However, I absolutely cannot replicate the fun of getting a group of friends in front of my current TV playing the Wii with anything. Yes I've played it (at E3 and more recently at the Nintendo World Store), yes it is completely revolutionary and yes it is for all ages, all genders, and all levels of gamers, in spite of what the angry 13 year old male poster preceding me might think.

The Wii is absolutely an evolution in interactive media. It's hard to grasp until you spend an hour playing it. Then it occurs to you how you never thought about how your were playing, or where the X and the Q and the hexagon button were. You simply reached into the game and played it. It's akin to playing that stupid crane game at the arcade where you grab prizes with the defective robot arm, except you just smashed the glass, reached in and took the toy. That's when it hits you: Nintendo got it right.

When you get one, your wife (or girlfriend if you are still 13) will reluctantly give it a shot at your request and have a good time playing it. And while you are thinking "That's pretty cool, she actually played with me for more than 3 minutes", she'll be thinking, "Wow... who knew I'd enjoy video games!" And one day you'll catch her playing it without you. Then it will hit you again: Nintendo got it right.

Then one day you'll be bragging about how you do all your emulation on your PC and have every ROM in existence. You'll say how you don't understand why anyone would pay for old games on the Virtual Console. Then something will go off in the back of your head: that you rarely ever actually play them on your PC. You have DVD-Rs full of roms that you never even unzipped, because who wants to sit in a computer chair playing console games by themselves with a crappy PC game pad? For a measly few bucks you could be playing true classics with your friends on your comfy couch in front of your nice big TV. Simply turn on the TV, select the game and go! Instead of booting the computer up, loading some goofy emulator, unzipping the rom you want, configuring your game pad, figuring out if/how the thing can show full screen and maintain the aspect ratio, and wondering if the thing will even run properly. Then it will hit you yet again: Nintendo got it right.

While Sony has been throwing money in the garbage by underpricing their hardware and churning out the same business model over and over, Nintendo has quietly been the #1 profitable console company for generations (look it up). They've been doing their homework and have come up with something truly unique, and something that is truly a step forward in home entertainment. If the Playstation generation of "gamers" would get off their tired "NINTENDO SI FOR TEH KIDDSIES!!!1 LOL OUT LOUD" trip, they might actually join in the fun... instead of being broke and bitter from spending all their money on what is essentially a non-upgradable computer that only runs licensed software.

Not that it matters... you will have to follow the contents of this article, because you won't be finding a PS3 this year.

Nothing on the PS3 is going to look as nice as GEARS of WAR does on the XBOX360, well at least not for another year.

Oh, and another thing. XBOX live is so mature and rocks now. Sony is going to have a hard time playing check-up with Microsoft.

The last nail is the MASTER CHIEF! Come on, The best selling game of all time. Bungie can do no wrong.

Huxley, a first person shooter that will allow XBOX360 and PC gamers to play with each other on the same server.

Microsoft has done very well with the xbox360.

I agree with the writer of this article. Who ever wrote the one post saying "Are you credible?", is hypocritcal. Who are they one to ask about credibility, did they infact test all three systems and with games that arent out yet. Probably not, so to bash someone who is on the same page as most of the people who read this. Also the Wii's motion sensing capabilities are a bit more advanced than the PS3. Now back to the subject Microsoft did with the 360 as Sony did with the PS2. That is to say they released the new system a year before the others, thus getting the jump on everyone else. The thing that kills the PS3 is the price, sure it has blue ray, but its a gaming system. Who cares about watching movies thats what dvd players are for.

What are you talking about??? You must have written that letter when your mommy and daddy were not home! When you want to comment on something, at least try to sound intelligent or at least sound like someone who has graduated from High School.
