Mercedes-Benz wants to make sure that less of their fancy, expensive cars get wrecked due to groggy drivers, so they're working on a new system to detect and prevent microsleep. That's the whole almost-nodding-off thing you do when you're exhausted and trying to get home without killing yourself or anyone else. The system would monitor everything from the time of day, the road conditions, the duration of the trip, and how loud you blast Van Halen.
The system would alert drivers when they exhibited signs of microsleep, trying to talk them into pulling over and taking a nap or at least getting some trucker speed at the next gas station to get them through the long haul. No word on when this handy technology will be equipped in new Benz's, but it's safe to say that whenever it is introduced I still won't be able to afford one.
