Linksys debuts VoIP phone for Yahoo Messenger

linksys_CIT310.jpg

In case you missed it, Yahoo's been offering a Skype-like service — making phone calls over the Net for just pennies — for a little while now, called Yahoo Messenger. So it was pretty much inevitable that companies were going to start selling phones made specifically for Yahoo's VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service, just like the Skype set's been enjoying for a while now.

The Linksys CIT310 dual-mode cordless phone plugs into your PC via USB port to ring up pals via Yahoo. With Yahoo Messenger, calls cost 2 cents a minute to pretty much anyone, and if you get the premium Phone In service, you'll get a phone number so people will be able to call you from cell phones and landlines (as opposed to just PCs). Of course, the CIT310 has a regular ol' telephone jack for when you just want to use your own line (dialing up the pizza guy on the corner, for instance). Bonus: the handset is all over the relatively new DECT standard for cordless phones, ensuring there won't be any interference from troublemaking airwaves. Feel honored.
