This lens is quite spectacular. The built-to-order Zeiss Apo Sonnar T* 1700mm F4 lens weighs in at 564 pounds. To put that in perspective, llamas rarely break the 450-pound mark. This gargantuan lens now holds the record for "the largest telephoto lens for civilian use in the world." (There are, of course, larger telescopes for looking deep into space, and who knows what the Pentagon's got.) While the identity of the owner is unknown, we do know that he (or she) has an expensive interest in long-distance wildlife photography, and decided that a Hasselblad 6x6 medium format camera and a Zeiss lens would suit those needs best. Whoever the person is, the boys at Zeiss are the real stars for outdoing themselves on the size and weight of the glass, not to mention developing specialized aiming and focusing systems for the epic lens. — Elliot Black
