For many, the Volkswagen Microbus is a priceless collector's item, bringing with it a welcome dose of nostalgia. VW is hoping to turn that fascination with the past into excitement about the future with its "Chameleon" vehicle, a classic Microbus retrofitted with the most cutting-edge vehicle technology. Among the enhancements that you won't find on the 1964 original: keyless entry, wide-angle parking cameras, and voice-activated controls. But the biggest mod is the 100% electric drive engine from Hybrid Technologies. And power outlets aren't the only place it gets power: those surfboards mounted on the roof? Solar panels. Not quite flower power, but it gets the job done. Unfortunately for any retro junkies out there the Chameleon is a one-off PR stunt from VW's Electronics Research Laboratory, and there are no plans to make even a limited run of the model for buyers. Ah, well, we were saving up our cash for a Tesla Roadster anyway. Check out some pictures of the Chameleon's dash after the jump.
