Star Trek nerds rejoice! Teleportation is getting closer to being a reality, with a couple of scientists in Denmark successfully transporting an object about a foot and a half. Don't squeeze into that monochromatic jumper just yet, Scotty — they're talking pretty tiny pieces of matter here. There isn't going to be any teleportation of sweaty convention attendees anytime soon. The process, known as quantum entanglement, is seriously complicated, as one would expect, but involves transporting both light and matter. It could have practical applications in data transfer in the future, but as for now it's just a cool party trick the boys from Copenhagen can use at the bars after work.

wow! doesnt matter really what it is, or what size it is!!! if we can teleport a wade of paper, all we have do make the teleporter BIGGER... keep up the great work scientists!!! :D

This is SWEET! Although, you'll never see me on one of these things. If and when the day comes that humans can be transported, I'll still be walking. Why?
Because the object created is NOT the one you start with..........it's a recreation.
That means it's fine for inanimate objects, but on living creatures? It kills the origonal and makes an exact duplicate on the other end...yes, the copy is EXACTLY the same as you are, but YOU are dead. You've been dissasembled.
Great idea for non-living things though! I can see it now! Pizza anywhere in the world in 20 mins or less (cooking still takes time of course). ANYTHING delivered right to your home any time of the day, guarunteed delivery in 3 mins or less! lmao. Look out Fedex! Look out Pizza delivery boy, guess your "normal" hookup at the Johnson house when the hubby is away ain't never happening again! lmao.

This is so cool. It's first step toward replicator technology and that's the one that will the real biggie.

I think the more immediate application will be encription--quantum information can't be evesdropped on between transmission and reception points. It also means instantaneous communication over extremely long distances will be possible someday--the closest thing we'll ever get to an honest-to-God ansible.

I find if i can pull my finger back... and hold it against my thumb.. then let my finger slip over the inside of my thumb.. i can make a piece of paper not only move but fly further than that.

I dunno, Ender, it seems to me you're prejudiced against yourself there. I think it's the overall pattern of a person that makes them who they are. It's certainly not the cells - all but the brain cells are replaced every seven years, and the atoms that make up the brain cells are replaced far more often than that. So if your teleported replica has the same memories as you, the same personality, the same pattern, and the same physical makeup, what's it missing? Why is it not you? I believe it is, and I'll fight for that copy's rights as fiercely as I'll fight for yours in that far far far off future which will probably include computers claiming sentience and people trying to download their memories into gadgets. Ok, maybe not so far off if Moore's Law doesn't fumble and we figure out what's next after making teensy weensy transistors, but whateva', right?

I agree with S31ENDER. I am a huge Star Trek fan, but that is what I always thought of the transporter idea, what comes out is not the real you. I would never get in one either.

It all matters Touren because teleportation and quantum teleportation are two totally different things. Quantum teleportation extracts the atomic information in an atom and this destroys the atom. The atomic information is than used to recreate an extact duplicate of the object being transported. If it was done on people, the recreated person would be the perfect clone. It would process all of the memories, emotions, feelings, and anything else that the person had when he was transported. This could be useful in replicating food but I doubt that people will want to die and have an extact copy of themselves running around. Teleportation refers to moving atoms to one place and not just deplicating them.

I believe this would be great for transporting objects, but i know i would never get into one of these things... i have a feeling you would not be the same person that come out the side out.
Actually, i saw an Outer Limits episode based on this same subject.
A girl was telporting somewhere else, but there was a malfunction, and 2 of her was created... one at the point of the teleport, and receiving end. If something like this were to happen... should the clone created be allowed to live?
I think this kind of technology would raise far to many religious concerns, and questions about a person's soul to be used on any human.
But it would be cool if i could get a pizza delivered to me in under a few minutes :)
