Cops will no longer have to just follow their ears to the scene of a crime when they hear gunshots as a new device called the ShotSpotter can tell them exactly where to go. A network of noise sensors, ShotSpotter can pinpoint exactly where shots were fired and get the 5-0 there faster than you can say "fully charged police Segway." Currently installed in the family vacation destination of Southeast Washington D.C., the coffee-can sized devices sit on the tops of various buildings just listening for some law breakin'. The system notifies the authorities oftentimes before 911 is called, getting cops to the scene before the perp has a chance to make it very far. It also gets help to those unfortunate folks on the business end of the shooting, giving them to the hospital a few precious minutes sooner.
