Sanyo develops 7.1-inch HDTV; point unknown

sanyo_tinyHD.jpg

In a move that possibly takes the obsession with small, sexy gadgets too far, Sanyo has created a 7.1-inch LCD panel with full HDTV resolution, at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Nice job, Sanyo — what the hell was every other manufacturer in the world thinking, trying to make bigger and bigger HD screens when the real final frontier was on the other end of the spectrum? Well, at least it's good to know that when bandwidth and hard-disk capacity get to the point where it'll be easy to download and copy HD content to a portable video player, the screens will be ready and waiting. Sanyo's scintillating screen is just a technology statement at this point, with no price, release date, or even a model number, so hold your questions about whether or not it has an HDMI input et al. for a while.

Hey genius, just because it?s HD doesn?t mean it has to overompensate for your lack of adequate size elsewhere. When HD is the end all be all standard after ?08, what?s gonna happen to the market for small TV?s? Think they are gonna go away? Hah, small TV markets will always be around, especially now that flat panels are getting cheaper and cheaper, you?ll be able to put small screened HD TV?s in all kinds of stuff (like the back of head rests, who?da thunk it??!!). Sanyo is smart for not actually wanting to sell it yet. Another good year and it will be marketable.
