Portable fireplace: comfort until your house
burns down

geniolfireplace.jpgNow that it's getting cold, at least here in the Northeast, my thoughts frequently drift to memories of crackling fireplaces that I enjoyed before I moved to a cramped, chimneyless apartment in NYC. If there's one thing I miss about living in the country, it's a nice fireplace. But hey, I'm not giving up hope. There are already some pretty mediocre options out there for us chimneyless firelovers, and now here's a new portable and stylish fireplace to help solve my problem. The Geniol Fireplace creates a fire that looks like it's suspended in midair inside a glass tube. Rather than having to chop wood you simply load it up with fuel paste and then you're set to go, no chimney required. Somehow it seems like it doesn't have the same charm as a normal fireplace, but beggars can't be choosers. It's available now for a whopping $626.

Huh. Y'know, we've had portable "fires" here in Britain for decades. You plug them in, they warm up the room, and you don't have to set fire to anything or refuel the things. Just pay the electricity bill their use incurs.

Now, instead of going for this retro kick, why can't these inventors get on with the flying cars, personal jet-packs, and moon-cities we were promised we'd have by 1986? ;D
