Acer's new notebooks: Fast as a Ferrari and almost as expensive

acer_ferrari.jpg

You know what they say about guys who drive Ferraris: they're clearly trying to compensate for something. So what would they say about Acer's Ferrari line of laptops? Maybe that the user has a speedy and powerful PC housed in a stylish case. Like their car namesake, the new Ferrari 1000 and Ferrari 5000 don't come cheap ($1,999 and $2,299 respectively), but they use technology pioneered in the world of Formula One racing, including the carbon-fiber casing that makes for a chic yet durable frame. Under the hood is just as impressive, with both using a dual core AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, which uses 64-bit architecture so this notebook won't be obsolete when Windows Vista arrives next year. The Ferrari 1000 features a 12.1-inch widescreen display with a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam, while the Ferrari 5000 desktop replacement features a 15.4-inch display along with a convenient Bluetooh VoIP phone and webcam. Available in black or — what else — Ferrari Red, Acer's new toys are perfect for computer geeks having a midlife crisis.
