Sigma SD14 has 14 megapixels, kinda sorta

Sigma SD14

I'll be damned if just the other day I wasn't thinking to myself, "Self, wouldn't it be great if there was a digital SLR camera on the market with in-camera JPEG capabilities, a bright viewfinder, a dust protector, a built-in flash, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, 14 megapixels and an image sensor with three separate color-sensitive layers? Self," I said, "Someday all cameras will rid themselves of this interpolation business. No complicated computations to generate missing color information!" The day is drawing nigh with the Sigma SD14 and its revolutionary Foveon X3 image sensor. However, there is one huge ink stain on my blueprint of paradise: Sigma gets their 14 megapixels by multiplying 4.7 by 3. You see, each of three individual (red, green and blue) sensors is actually 4.7 MP, which stack to an effective 14 MP. Now don't get me wrong — for the image size, it probably has the best color accuracy and detail of the whole lot of them, and in the coming years I can see this technology sweeping the market. Still, when you consider that the SD14 is slated to debut at approximately $2,100, the difference between 4.7 and 10 megapixels is quite glaring.
