The NmG: Part car. Part motorcycle. All electric.

nmg_yellow.jpg

What is this, dorky electric cars summer? Tesla Motors' smokin' Roadster notwithstanding, after the Zooop, we thought we'd seen the last of speedy plug-in vehicles that resemble escape pods from some kind of giant yellow mothership. I guess Myers Motors had other ideas, offering a one-man car called the NmG that's completely electric (NmG stands for "No more Gas," apparently), charging in 4 to 8 hours depending on the outlet voltage. You can burn that energy pretty quickly, too, motoring down the highway at speeds up to 70 mph. The downside: the charge will only get you 30 miles or so. Still, that should be plenty for most folks, since you have to think that most commutes outside the Tri-State Area are shorter than 15 miles, and you can even ride the NmG — technically a motorcycle — in the carpool lane. But what happens when your battery, like the one on my ancient iBook, doesn't hold a charge like it used to? I guess you could either start moving closer and closer to work or hit Myers up for a new one. That is, if the local football team hasn't already beaten you up for driving such a nerdy-looking thing. But you have to give the NmG credit for being actually available, right here, right now, for $24,900.

At least this one is affordable. I guess you could always buy a small tow-behind trailer equiped with more batteries for those longer distance drives.
