Engineers are finally figuring out how to boost the performance of electric vehicles to that of high-end gas-powered cars. First there was the Tesla Roadster, now comes the PML Mini. Outfitted with a small internal combustion engine and four electric engines (one per wheel), the PML Mini has a total of 640 horsepower. It jumps off the line, going from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds and topping out around 150 mph. If it runs solely on the electric engines, it can make it about 250 miles without needing a recharge; kick in the combustion engine and that figure jumps to about 930 miles. Rather than coming equipped with mechanical brakes, the car stops via efficient generators that reuse the energy acquired during acceleration. Unfortunately, this is a modded car, not a production model, so you won't be able to buy one anytime soon. However, the technology is obviously out there for environmentally friendly vehicles that have the hearts of sports cars, so hopefully we'll see similar vehicles hit highways in the near future.

George Clooney's Tango also does 0-60 mph in 4 seconds. Commuter Cars makes these two-seaters (fore and aft,) that are no wider than a Honda Goldwing's handlebars. With all the weight at the bottom, they're un-tippable, and also incorporate a racing crash-cage into the body.
Phoenix Motors builds electric classic kit-cars that soon will be powered by new quick-charging and safe lithium batteries. They're not as fast as they look, but should do well in traffic.
About 5000 cars converted to battery power now cruise America's roads, many built by owners or small shops. See EVWorld for more info.

Neet ,But if you were to take a look a "Mother Earth
News" of the 1970's you would see the plans for the same thing. The book and plans are there.
Centel Telephone Co. of Tallahassee Fla had a fleet of Ford/Madza Ranger Type of Pickup trucks for Telephone service use in about 1978 ,were in use for testing for about a year there.
It what is old is new again !!

"If what is old is new again".
That is really true.
Electric vehicles were the first to sell over 10,000 at the end of the 19th century, broke the 60 MPH limit (and held the world's speed record), were manufactured and sold by Ransom E. Olds (father of the Oldsmobile), and were outselling gas powered vehicles until Henry Ford began the Model T.
Speaking of Ford, the great-grandmother of William Ford, Clara Ford, never drove any of her husband's cars! She drove a Detroit Elecetric:

Now if her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren learned from her (and not from Henry, we will be all driving electrics and oil prices would not be news.
Clara Ford had a better idea!

In the modern age where pollution, greenhouse gasses, and rising oil prices are destroying the world we live in all in the name of Big Business and money, we need a revolution. We need to become more ecologically conscious and responsible. To this end, I know we are all dependant on gas powered cars because there is no other currently available alternative, we need to press our Congressmen and Representatives, all our elected officials to put greater influence on the much needed transformation to electric cars and hybrids. Only through a change like this will we be able to not only be seen as the worlds super power, but be able to fix so many of the problems we face financially in our own country and in the world. Just imagine if we got together and made the change to electric and hybrids as a nation, and used the oil we had to sell to other countries. The revenue from that would make it easier to pay for better programs for schools, health care, social security, scientific advancements and such. People wouldn't need to pay for gas at such high prices, and the quality of life for families would be higher. It is a wonderful concept and a definite "Win-Win" situation for us all as a nation. Lets make our voices heard through our elected officials. Make Big Business and Big Oil stand up and help us be a better nation. Only together as a nation, one people, can we achieve this dream for us and the world.

Yes, sounds wonderfull. Although I like the idea of not being dependent on oil, your interpretation is a little off. OK, EVERYONE spend yourself into oblivian so we can all have electric hybrids. Oil companies lay off 95% of your employees since we know longer need your product. Mr. Congressman, you can confiscate the oil from private companies no longer needed (which was imported anyway) and sell it back out to whomever will buy it to pay for Social Security and whatever other entitlement/socialistic programs you deam appropriate. Screw private property. But Hey! I got a great new ugly slow hybrid!
Not to get preachy, has anyone noticed that neoluminaris' (the new enlightened one) post follows Marxism pretty close.
